Motorola recently announced that the start date of October 16, it will launch Motorola XOOM Family Edition. Motorola is gearing to launch to retail a special edition of its Xoom tablet that targets children and their parents. The Xoom Family Edition is similar to the original with its Android 3.1, 10.1-inch IPS screen, dual-core 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, and 16GB of storage. What makes it different from its predecessor is how Motorola downplayed some of its hardware specs to slash down its cost.

The Xoom Family Edition comes preloaded with $40 worth of apps. Some of these apps are targetted to kids like SimCity Deluxe and Asphalt 6, while parents can control which apps the young ones can access through Kid Zone Zoodles. Other apps include Netflix, Quickoffice Pro HD, all Google apps, some Amazon apps, and Motorola’s own app showcase portal called MotoPack.

This special edition tablet, which some tech blogs would rather look at it as a new-gen device, is exclusively distributed by Best Buy beginning October 16. It comes with a suggested retail price of $379.
